EMDR Can Help You Heal

We have learned that trauma is not just an event that took place sometime in the past; it is also the imprint left by that experience on mind, brain, and body.
— Bessel van der Kolk

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an empirically-supported therapy used to treat trauma, in all of its forms. A big component of this therapy entails developing and practicing effective strategies to manage strong emotions, cognitions, and physical sensations as they arise. Many clients find that developing these coping skills allows them to feel more grounded and less anxious in all areas of life. Over the course of treatment, clients experience significantly less distress connected to these traumatic life events.

How does it work?

When we sleep, our brain shifts into REM sleep, during which our eyes move rapidly back and forth. This bilateral movement helps the brain process the day’s events, consolidate memories, and store information. EMDR uses this same type of bilateral stimulation to allow the brain to process traumatic memories, emotions, and physical sensations. When this happens, we start to heal. It becomes easier to manage psychological, emotional, and physical distress triggered by our traumatic experiences.
